You hear it everywhere. You see it everywhere. And it really is important: SEO.
What is SEO?
SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization. And if you have a website or a blog or something like that, you will have surely stumbled across this term before.
Through SEO
you can improve overall traffic to your site by ranking higher with search
engines (Moz, 2019).
Ranking factors for SEO
Search
engines use different criteria in order to rank your website. Here are the ones
according to Santora (2019) that I think are the most important:
1. Accessible Website
Obviously if you want any search engin to index your website, it needs to be fully functionable and on top of that secure.2. Short loading times
You
have probably been in this situation: You opened a certain page, but it is
taking just a few seconds too long to load, so you leave it again. Search
engines know this and therefore rank you higher when loading times are short.
And never forget about mobile page speed.
3. Mobile friendly
Like I said: Never forget about the mobile page. Most users nowadays visit a website on their phone, so having a mobile friendly layout is very important.
And never forget about mobile page speed.
3. Mobile friendly
4. Optimized Content
Content is still the most important thing. And there are quite a few things you can do to optimize it for search engines, such as including videos, using keywords etc.
5. Technical SEO
Apart from the actual content, there are also a few technical twists that can increase your ranking. Using different headings gives your posts better structure, making use of the alt-tags for images gives you better chances with the image search by search engines and so on.
Why is SEO important?
I have
already mentioned the importance of SEO, but why is it so important? Or let's
ask: What can it do for your business? Well, a lot (Heltzman, 2018).
Traffic
First and foremost,
it of course increases the traffic to your page. The higher it ranks; the more
people click on it.
Higher Visibility
And
obviously, the more people click on your website and the higher you rank, the
more often your page is even shown to potential customers.
Trust
The higher
a page ranks, the more likely people are to trust the information on that page.
Cost effective
As you are
not paying to appear higher but instead optimizing your content, this is one of
the most cost-effective marketing techniques.
Highly Measurable
SEO is
generally very measurable. With Google Analytics you can see the effect of
every change you make. Therefore, you can continuously improve your website and
be more successful.
And the
list goes on.
Let me know about your experience with SEO. See you next time.
